DeepL←こいつ，ヤバくね？という記事の第二弾です。

うちの妻は働きつつ大学院で勉強していますが，最近は英語論文はもっぱらDeepLにぶち込んで読んでいるとのこと。
よく「大学では英語論文を読みこなさなくちゃいけないから読みの力が大事。文法大事。」的なことも言われますが，論文こそ，基本的には誰が読んでも分かりやすい書き方をされているはずなので，こうした機械翻訳の得意分野でもあるはずです。
「いやいや，それだと本当にその訳が正しいか分からない」という意見もありますが，たしかにそれはその通り。ですが，アカデミックな世界の術語って慣れも必要で，機械の力借りながらたくさん読んでいるうちに，量が質に転化するというか，「なるほどこの分野はこういう研究動向が主なんだな」という感覚が身につき，たまーにDeepLがおかしな訳をしたとしても，「あれ，こんなことを言っているのはこの研究分野の文脈上おかしくないか？」と原文に戻るきっかけを与えてくれることも期待できます。
ということで（どういうことで？）今回は，京大英作文を20年分くらい拾ってきて*1，DeepLにぶち込んでみました。いかがでしょうか。
細かいミスはある。たとえば2017年の「生兵法」が "raw military force"となっていたり，2014年の「さっきの駅で降ろしてください！」が"please drop me off at the station just now!"だったり*2，2004年の「イタリアといえばトマト」が "Italy is tomatoes"となっていたり*3。
ただ同時に考えなくちゃいけないのは，これらの訳がすべて各3秒以内で訳出されているというそのスピード。
さらに言えば質の面だって，「え，これ変じゃない？」の数より，「ううむなるほど，そう訳すのか」の方が多いのじゃないか。や，ま，それはその人の英語力によるけど。笑

昨日の英語教員勉強会では，東大の読解問題をじっくり読み進めていって楽しかったのだけど，その問題文と出典原文を比べて，やはり自分はモヤモヤしていた。筆者は原文では自分の立場を明示するような言葉を何度も使っているのに，読解問題ではそうした，読者にとって読解の助けになる，筆者にとって自分の主張を伝えるための言葉を削いで，あえて読み取りづらい文章にしてしまっている印象を受けた。入試の性格上，難しすぎる単語を書き換えるのは仕方がないと思うけど，原文筆者が見てがっかりするような書き換えは，よくないよなあと。
